Rancho Cucamonga, CA (March 1, 2010)- The Frontier Project, a sustainable demonstration building open to the public, was recognized by Southern California Edison (SCE) for reducing its carbon footprint by 88,873 pounds of CO2, compared to a similar facility; this equates to 740 tanker trucks worth of CO2. SCE's Savings by Design Program awarded the Frontier Project with more than $34,000 in incentives for a variety of energy-efficient installations included in the new, green construction project, which opened November 2009.

The Frontier Project is able to reduce its annual kilowatt-per-hour usage by nearly 100,000 by including dual pane, low-emissivity windows with exterior glazing, insulated concrete form (ICF) construction, fly ash content in the concrete walls, a redwood shade trellis, LED lighting, day lighting concepts, and lighting control technology. Additionally, the Frontier Project is able to save around 2,500 Therms of natural gas annually with features including a green roof and cool roof that help reduce heat gain from the facility's roof, a close approach cool tower and solar chimneys, and variable refrigerant flow air conditioning systems.

"The Frontier Project Foundation is pleased that our community resource is recognized by Edison for its efficiency," comments Randall Reed, Chairman of the Frontier Project Foundation. "We invite everyone to tour the building, attend a workshop, and learn how they can become more environmentally efficient in their own lives."

The Frontier Project is open Monday- Friday, 9 a.m.-3 p.m. for walk-in visitors. Upcoming community workshops include the Sustainable Saturday Series, on Saturday, March 13, at 9 a.m., where attendees will learn about how to create an Edible Garden. On Saturday, April 10, the Frontier Project will host an Earth Day Celebration with San Bernardino County Supervisor Paul Biane, Second District, from 11 a.m.-2 p.m. For more information, or to schedule a guided tour, visit www.frontierproject.org or call (909)944.6025.
